GPS measurements record where you actually are, so you need to be on the land, outdoors, with location access allowed for the app. Under Record movement with GPS in New measurement there are four ways to do it.
Walk an area with GPS
- Choose Walk an area with GPS and stand at a corner.
- Tap Start walking. Hold still for a moment while the app averages the start point.
- Walk the boundary at a steady pace. Pause stops recording, for example to go around an obstacle, and Resume carries on.
- Back near the start, the app tells you the boundary is ready to close. Tap Finish and close.
A long walk can record hundreds of points. The app then offers to Simplify the track, which keeps its shape with fewer points, or to Keep all points.
Mark each corner with GPS
For straight-sided land, walk to each corner, stand still, and tap Capture point. The app averages several fixes for each corner, so the corners are more precise than a walked line. Tap View result when all corners are in.
Record a route with GPS
Choose Record a route with GPS, tap Start recording, and walk, ride or drive. Tap Finish route at the end to get the distance you travelled.
Record a corridor with GPS
Walk or drive along the centerline of a road, ditch or strip, then set its full width to get its area.
For a more accurate result
- Hold the phone up, screen up, away from your body.
- Keep clear of buildings, dense trees and tall walls.
- Walk slowly and steadily; sharp turns and stop-and-go make points more likely to be rejected.
- Points that fall short of Settings → GPS quality requirement are left out, and the result says how many. See How accurate is it?
For centimeter accuracy you need an RTK receiver, a correction account and internet on the phone: see What you need for centimeter accuracy.
